Q Plus started as a grassroots, community based, youth led, volunteer run organization with the goal of filling gaps we saw in queer youth programming across Connecticut. We started running events with a queer youth open mic in May 2019. We’ve hosted Queer Youth Afterparty open mics for both Hartford Pride and New Haven Pride, and marched in the Middletown Pride Parade. We’ve been holding monthly open mics online since the pandemic, and recently expanded our programming to include several leadership, social support, and GSA support programs.
We are expanding and evolving all the time! We are a group of teens, young adults, and older adult supporters working to create more youth accessible spaces, uplift youth voices, and empower young people. Our overall goal is to create space for queer youth to be authentically and entirely themselves. Every event and program we put on is born of a need identified by queer young people, rather than suggested by adults. Our plan is to continue changing and evolving as the needs of queer youth continue to change and evolve.

When we expanded to include school and social support programs, things changed. We can no longer be 100% volunteer run; the commitment is too great to balance with another job. Paying staff has become necessary to the survival of our programs. Plus, everyone’s time and experience is valuable and should be compensated!
In March of this year, we officially received our 501(c)3 status from the IRS. We’ve heavily researched the benefits and restrictions associated with being a nonprofit, and learned that many restrictions we operated under at other nonprofits were incorrect interpretations of the law. We’re building a structure that will allow us to function as a legally recognized nonprofit without sacrificing our values, priorities or mission.
We are looking to sustain our existing programs long term through fundraising and grants. However, we receive LOTS of requests from all over the state to do open mics and groups in their areas. We cannot do this without expanding and seeking collaboration with other orgs!
